World Heritage: Where Are We? An Empirical Analysis. By Bruno S. Frey, Paolo Pamini. A working paper for the Center for Research in Economics, Management and the Arts (CREMA).

An empirical overview of the UNESCO World Heritage List according to various characteristics is presented. The officially stated intention of the World Heritage List is to protect global heritage. Our focus is on the imbalance of the existing List according to countries and continents. The existing distribution is compared to hypothetical distributions considered “balanced” from different points of view. It turns out that the World Heritage List is unbalanced with respect to a distribution of Sites according to population, area or per capita income. This paper wants to reveal facts about the existing distribution, and is designed to help a reasoned discussion to emerge.

Great Barrier Reef Outlook Report 2009

The Great Barrier Reef Outlook Report 2009 was provided to the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and the Arts on 30 June 2009 and subsequently tabled in the Australian Parliament.

The Great Barrier Reef Outlook Report 2009 is a summary of the past and present condition of the environmental, economic and social values of the Great Barrier Reef and presents its possible future.

This first Outlook Report highlights that the Great Barrier Reef is one of the most diverse and remarkable ecosystems in the world and remains one of the most healthy coral reef ecosystems. Climate change, continued declining water quality from catchment runoff, loss of coastal habitats from coastal development and a small number of impacts from fishing are identified as the priority issues reducing the resilience of the Great Barrier Reef.

The Outlook Report has been prepared by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority based on the best available information. Many people with an interest in the Great Barrier Reef have contributed to its development, including leading Great Barrier Reef scientists, industry representatives and members of regional communities. The Report was independently peer reviewed.

« OBSERVONS LES ASTRES AVEC LE PATRIMOINE MONDIAL »
17 au 24 avril 2009

Dans le cadre de la Journée internationale des monuments et des sites, le Centre de Documentation UNESCO-ICOMOS organise l’exposition photographique « Observons les astres avec le patrimoine mondial ».

L’exposition présente différents biens culturels inscrits sur la Liste du patrimoine mondial de l’UNESCO, de Stonehenge à l’Arc géodésique de Struve, ayant tous en commun leur lien avec l’astronomie. A travers un parcours photographique elle célèbre la Journée internationale des monuments et des sites et pose un regard sur le thème du 18 avril 2009: patrimoine et science.

Le vernissage se déroulera le vendredi 17 avril entre 17h00 et 19h00.

L’exposition restera ouverte au public du lundi 20 au vendredi 24 avril de 10h00 à 18h00.

Stonehenge - World Heritage Site Management Plan 2009

The Stonehenge World Heritage Site Management Plan 2009 is available online at the following address:

The Stonehenge World Heritage Site Management Plan provides a strategy to conserve and manage the Site for present and future generations. It covers the whole World Heritage Site landscape (more than 2,600 hectares around Stonehenge). Based on a detailed assessment of the significance of the Site and of the management issues, the Plan outlines long-term aims, short to medium term policies and a detailed action plan.

The aim of the Management Plan is to sustain for present and future generations the Outstanding Universal Value of the World Heritage Site: its outstanding prehistoric monuments and archaeological landscape. The Plan takes into account other issues such as access, nature conservation, farming, education, research and the needs of the local community.

The first Stonehenge World Heritage Site Management Plan was published in 2000. A revised plan was published in 2009 after extensive consultation with landowners, the local community, statutory bodies and other interested parties. Its preparation was led by English Heritage on behalf of the Stonehenge World Heritage Site Committee, a steering group of stakeholders. The Management Plan is recognised by all parties as the overarching strategy for the sustainable management of the World Heritage Site.

UNESCO World Heritage Centre: Policy document on the impacts of climate change on World Heritage Properties

The "Policy document on the impacts of climate change on World Heritage properties", adopted by the 16th General Assembly of States Parties to the World Heritage Convention, has been published in English and French.

The document was prepared with the participation of relevant climate change experts and practitioners of heritage conservation and management, appropriate international organizations and civil society, and was also endorsed by the World Heritage Committee at its 31st session in 2007.

The document touches on synergies between conventions on the issue; identification of future research needs in this area, legal questions on the role of the World Heritage Convention with regard to suitable responses to Climate Change, and linkages to other UN and international bodies dealing with the issues of climate change.

Parution du document d'orientation sur le changement climatique et les sites du patrimoine mondial

Le « Document d'orientation sur les impacts du changement climatique sur les biens du patrimoine mondial » adopté par la 16è Assemblée générale des Etats parties à la Convention du patrimoine mondial a été publié en anglais et en français.

Ce document a été préparé avec la participation d'experts en changement climatique et de praticiens de la conservation et la gestion du patrimoine, ainsi que la contribution d'organisations internationales appropriées et de la société civile. Il a été avalisé par le Comité du patrimoine mondial lors de sa 31è session en 2007.

Ce document traite des synergies existant entre les différentes conventions sur cette question, de l'identification des futurs besoins dans le domaine de la recherche, des questions juridiques sur le rôle de la Convention du patrimoine mondial en regard des réponses adéquates face au changement climatique, et des liens avec les autres organes des Nations Unies et organismes internationaux traitant de cette problématique.
